Background

Human monkeypoxis a zoonotic disease endemic in Central and West Africa. The causative agent, monkeypox virus, belongs to the family Poxviridae, genus Orthopoxvirus. Of the seven known orthopox species, variola virus causes the most severe disease(smallpox) and various forms of the attenuated vaccinia virus are used for vaccination. Skin lesions and other early clinical manifestations of monkeypoxin humans resemble those of smallpox.
